Jurong Church History

Jurong Church has its history as far back as the 70s. However, it wasn’t called Jurong Church because there wasn't an SDA church in Jurong then. Its congregation attended Queenstown SDA Church located at a 2-storey shop house at Block 14, 104 Stirling Road . There were about 30 to 40 regular worshippers and the place was too congested. The english congregation was growing fast while the chinese congregation gradually attended Thomson SDA Chinese Church.

Around 1975, a single storey bungalow house was purchased from a member of the Balestier SDA Church . We raised $280,000 with the help of our Mother Church – the Balestier SDA Church . By 1980, there were about 50 to 60 regular worshippers.

Around this time, plans were made to relocate as residential properties couldn’t be used as public places of worship. Many alternatives were considered. Around 1983, the Singapore churches tendered for and was successful in bidding for a piece of land at 90 Jurong East to build the Singapore Mission HQ and a Church for the Queenstown SDA Church . Thomson SDA Chinese Church mooted the idea of establishing a Chinese congregation in Jurong and actively raised funds for the church building too.

For the next 3 years, the Queenstown SDA Church rented facilties from the nearby Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrement for Sabbath School and Worship services.

Around 1985, the new Church Building was completed. The core group of the Queenstown English church membership of about 40 formed the seed membership of the current Jurong SDA Church . The Chinese congregation of the Queenstown Church returned from the Thomson SDA Chinese Church to join the Jurong SDA Chinese Church .

For us, today is a dream come true. We wish to thank the Lord for inspiring and uniting the two congregations at Jurong Church to make this grand renovation possible.

However, at Jurong Church , we remember that just as it was the presence of Christ that made the rebuilt Temple more glorious than the original Solomon’s Temple , so the true beauty of Jurong church goes beyond the externals.

With the Lord’s help and Spirit, we are ready for the next phase of our Church Renovation – building the Acts 2 Church here amongst our community.
